Mascot and fashionable workwear
Mascot has introduced its Rock Series at A+A 2011. The idea behind it: Workers like their workwear so much that they not just wear it on the job but also on the street after work. According to chief international marketing Carsten Jul Christensen the fashion series stands for extreme durability and new design.

Brian Wehner Sørensen is key account manager at Ox-on from Denmark. "Some gloves in the field of PPE are problematic," he explains. "Many leather products are treated with chrome and that can trigger allergies. We produce gloves with synthetic material rather than chrome. This is our way with a bright outlook into the future since allergies are a wide-spread phenomenon."
Andreas Eisen, Head of Key Account at “diemietwäsche.de”, realizes that there is a steady demand for individual client support. “Mietwäsche (rent clothes) is an assemblage of seven laundries run by their respective owners. "Our communication is direct and we provide an individual and personal service. If someone needs special clothing, we provide it." Eisen's prognosis: "Leasing is the future".
Willem van Setten, sales representative at the Dutch company BPC Amersfoort, knows all about business with jeans and denim. "There seem to be two trends in terms of jeans workwear. Firstly, pants become more functional and more durable. Our newest product, for example, is a pair of jeans that lasts ten times longer than a usual pair. Secondly, workwear becomes more fashionable. The typical blue pair of workpants is replaced by jeans with fashionable washing and better looks.”
Michio Usami, Director Overseas Division at Unitika, comes from Japan. The company deals with reflection material for workwear. Europe is a good market for such products, says Usami. "However, Japanese companies have to concentrate on one goal in order to distinguish themselves from Chinese companies which are on the advance. Our company succeeds by making our reflectors extremely well washable, so they won't wear off so quickly."
The Russian company Energocontract focusses on insect repellent. "Our workwear protects people from rain and cold as well as from insects due to a built-in insect repellent," says PR manager Irina Nikolaeva. "Here at A+A, we have established some good contacts with European partners, so we can well expand westwards. The market for high quality material is growing and we are a part of it."
Louis V. Ott, Technical Sales Manager at Gentex (USA), knows all about extreme temperatures. His company produces fabrics that can resist very hot surroundings. "Overalls for firefighters, made out of our fabrics, can protect you from temperatures up to 3.000 degrees F". For the future, Ott sees the development to even lighter and more flexible materials. "My personal wish is for higher security standards in Europe compared to the US".
"Europe attaches importance to safety", says Otavio L. Ermel, Director of the Brasilian company Acoreal. The company produces components for safety shoes such as steel toe caps. "Standards of safety will grow even more in Europe. This is why we, as a Southamerican company, come to A+A – to gain a foothold here. Nevertheless, our branch in Brazil will also keep growing".
Poland: Krzysztof Makowski from the Central Institute for Labour Protection
Krzysztof Makowski is chief of the Department of Personal Protective Equipment at the Central Institute for Labour Protection in Poland. "A big research topic at the moment is protection standards having to do with nano materials," he says. Krzysztof Makowski also does research in virtual reality measurement. "This enhances protection and lowers costs at the same time. I think the future its all about making PPE more ergonomic and more comfortable".
Thomas Möller sends out a clear message: "Customer first and innovation with purpose". Scott Safety underwent a rebranding procedure. The sales director tells us what this is about.

Imiran Saeed Malik from India visits A+A 2011 in order to find information on silicone gloves. "That is an environmentally friendly material. Exactly what we need since green topics are in high demand at the moment. Moreover, silicone has a good grip and that is important at work."
Soraja Sa-Nguan-Sri came to A+A 2011 all the way from Thailand. "I work in life rescue and therefore good workwear and tough, sturdy material is important to me. The trend is to get better harnesses – they have to be tough and waterproof, because we also work on and in the water."
Boris Zauner works at a university. "To me, it is important to get some information about the newest developments, especially in the field of technology. Web-based systems are an important topic in the near future. In risk assessment, there are more and more computers in service".
Celia Grey works in a company concerned with cleaning buildings. "At A+A 2011, I would like to learn more about hazardous materials, as our employees often have to deal with chemicals. Especially since a new regulation has come up and I wonder what that means to the company. I thought that I can surely find information on the topic here".
Katja Petersen and Jane Bauenmand from Denmark came to A+A 2011 to learn more about workwear. "One thing is for sure: Nylon and nano will become an important issue in workwear. Intelligent workwear is certainly a trend with developments pointing in one direction: softer, waterproof, breathable, functional and easy to clean!”
Jan Krüger is doing scientific research in the field of illumination engineering and wants to know what A+A 2011 has on offer in this respect. "Many standards have to be met in a working place when it comes to illumination. It starts with aspects of energy saving and the safety of lamps and it continues with design and physiological demands. The future lies in LED illumination and dynamic illumination. With this, we can vary for instance colour and intensity of the light".
Stefanie Hofmann has to do with the workplace design for disabled people. "I am interested in special chairs and tables, and generally in the topics of health at work and ergonomics. I think that my profession will meet the demands of the future, because there will always be disabled people, and we have to care about their needs".
Wolfgang Kalka cares for neat hands. "I am looking for shoes, gloves, but also skin protection since I have to do with the chemical industry. My wish for the future is a hand lotion which can be used universally. Instead of applying ten different lotions for different demands, I would prefer one for every occasion".
The company Elten has followed the trend that safety shoes look more and more like casual footwear. Heiner van Elten explains why this is important and why ladies also profit from innovations in the field of protecting shoes.

After opening its gates this morning, visitors started entering the trade fair grounds for A+A 2011 in order to view most interesting highlights in terms of safety, security and health at work.
More than a decade ago, Gaston Mille had a safety over-shoe with a steel bar for visitors patented. Now a new design has been developed that considers fashion conscious women: The safety over-shoe fits to any shoe thanks to a flexible fastening belt - including high heels.
The company ELTEN presents for the first time safety boots named "Python" with a convenient latch: it is possible to adjust the shoes with just one turn to its perfect fit.
The new protection goggles X-pect 8000 includes eleven types that combine safety with wearing comfort. They are suitable for many applications. Due to ergonomic design, the new goggles can be combined with Dräger breathing masks.
Wearing a helmet is necessary for many kinds of work. However, a helmet has to meet many standards. Sometimes even in terms of fashion - just as this sample made out of pink material and a lot of strass.
Gore presents the first insert for gloves that has been especially developed for the technical assistance after accidents by firefighters and emergency rescue services.
Surface materials such as polyester or polyamide are themselves prone to damage under the influence of heat and flames. These materials can now be combined with a "Gore-Tex" membrane which forms a stable extinguishing barrier to suddenly occurring flames.
A good fit is especially important for protective clothing. uvex saftey group therefore developed a system called 3D and presents products that display high ergonomics and new technologies in order to achieve the best individual fit.
Finally, the trade fair A+A has opened its doors on 18 October 2011. Those interested have been anxious to enter the trade fair grounds of Messe Düsseldorf. Our reporter Emily Whigham spoke to visitors from all over the world.
